October 2006 Update!

Dear zen,

Greetings sled heads! As some of you already know, winter has begun! New York and Toronto have already taken a nasty hit of winter weather and record snowfalls; Let's hope this is a sign of things to come this winter! We are over due for a Monster Winter, don't you think?

This edition of our news letter will talk about that Buffalo NY storm and more. The Zen snowmobile house in St-Zenon Quebec, is for sale on the auction block right now with five days left, so we will talk about that too. Also, I just returned from the NY Big East snowmobile show, and that will be worth a few paragraphs as well....so read on!

Thanks for reading! I hope to meet some of you this winter, as you ride the fabulous trails of Quebec and enjoy her beauty and her people! Ride sober - ride safe - obey the speed limits - do not ride on rivers or lakes until you have spoken to a local person, to see if it is safe. Remember, sometimes the water doesn't freeze up if there is a foot os snow insolating it.

Also Remember, there are only 5 days left in this auction, so get in there are make your play. See you on the trails in Quebec next winter!

(This old blue truck is one of many that are still in limited use here in Mossbank Saskatchewan... They're everywhere! Hard working old farm trucks never die... they are still put to good use occasionally, and add a real flavour to the town; they add a visual prairie nostalgia to the place.)

Sincerely, Zenwaiter

Please notice my change of address and phone number here. I am now living in Mossbank Saskatchewan! Yes, I got tired of paying 1,000. a month rent in Vernon BC, and moved here because the houses are cheap, and also, because the people are great, the land is rich and beautiful, and central south Saskatchewan is a great home base for travelling anywhere in North America!

There are 450 people living in this town, located 40 minutes to the south of Moose Jaw, a city of 40,000, located right on the trans Canada highway. I am 7 hours from Calgary, 12 hours from Vancouver, one hour from Regina, eight hours from Winnipeg, 3 days from Quebec, and 12 hours from Yellowstone!

I have all the amenities of a big city 40 minutes away, but enjoy the rural life in Mossbank. That translates into no traffic lights, no noise, no pollution, no hordes of people. It also means peace of mind, bird hunting, farm fresh eggs, knowing your neighbors, and no more rent! I love it!

Buffalo's October Blast of Winter!

Oct. 13, 2006, BUFFALO, N.Y. — Deadly snowstorm clobbers western N.Y. . BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo lay all but paralyzed Friday after a record-breaking early snowstorm whited out the brilliant colors of fall, buried pumpkins and apples and caught this city famous for its wintry weather flat-footed. At least three deaths were blamed on the storm.

The heavy, wet snow snapped tree limbs all over western New York, leaving some 380,000 homes and businesses without power.A state of emergency was in effect across the region, banning all nonessential travel. Branches and power lines lay draped across cars and houses, and normally busy downtown streets were still, blanketed by up to 2 feet of snow.

Let's just hope and pray that this storm is a sign of things to come this winter, all over our favorite snowmobiling territory! I think we are over due for a huge winter. Click here to get the rest of this story...

This storm brings back memories of a November storm in 2000... here is the report from CNN on that storm! Buffalo, N.Y., snowstorm closes airport, strands school children Stranded cars sit motionless on snowy Buffalo roadways Tuesday morning Nov 21, The Buffalo-Niagara International Airport remained closed this morning after a pre-Thanksgiving storm buried Buffalo, New York, with record snowfall. Police at Buffalo Airport said it would remain closed until at least noon. Schools were closed for the day.

More than 24 inches of snow fell over 24 hours Monday, stranding schoolchildren and motorists, bringing traffic to a standstill and prompting officials to declare a local state of emergency. The National Weather Service said the storm had resulted in the third highest snowfall over a 24-hour period with 24.8 inches. John Fahey, superintendent of transportation for Buffalo schools, said about 200 students had to be sheltered in public buildings.

The Buffalo school system serves 44,000 children. With the loss of radio communications from one of the city's school bus terminals, some parents were unable to determine where their children were, officials said. Fahey said the school system launched a concerted telephone effort to contact parents.

Some children, he said, spent the night in locations away from home. About 25 students were spending the night at Early Childhood Center School No. 54 in the city's central district. That school buses about 350 of its 600 students, ages 4 to 8, principal Elizabeth Martina said.

"One bus left and returned with our students," Martina said. "Two other buses from other schools stopped at our school because they had students who had been on a bus for four hours." The remaining children and staff turned classrooms into makeshift shelters using napping cots for bedding. What would have been the Thanksgiving meal has provided an ample supply of food for the stranded crew, Martina said.

The storm was called a "lake-effect event." In such storms, cold air blows across Lake Erie and absorbs warmer air. The weather can vary from locally heavy snow in narrow bands to clear skies just a few miles away, creating dangerous driving conditions from poor visibility.

Big East Show 2006

The 2006 edition of the Big East snowmobile show, was excellent, but temps of around 73F may have kept attendance lower than usual. It seemed a little slower than previous years to me, never-the-less, I had the opportunity to meet hundreds of snowmobilers, and see everything new that our industry has to offer!

JP from 100 lacs Outfitter was my main sponsor this year, and deserves a vote of thanks for covering my expenses at the show this year. I tried my hardest to introduce many of you to his amazing snowmobile wilderness, by showing photos of his place which I took last December, when he had 2 feet of snow already. Altogether, he got 8 feet of snow. Yes, you have to drive an extra two hours to get up there north of Mont Laurier, but it is well worth the effort.

There is no way I can tell you here, of all the new and cool things I saw at the show, so I will just point out a few things that I found new and exciting. First off, I met Richard, owner of Empire Gloves MFG Inc. He gave me a demonstration of the self heating gloves which he manufactures in New York. These battery powered hand warming gloves, and first rate quality, and will keep your hands at 60F for four to six hours. They retail for 99.usd.

I also met Chris, another guy that manufactures his product right in the USA. Snosuit is his Minnesota based clothing company, that creates a military quality snowmobile suit, loaded with well thought out features. I hope to have the suit here to test it out this winter. Check it out here! Chris is going to start a revival of the old style 'ski-doo' suit. This is high quality workmanship at a great price.

A Calgary based manufacturer has created the Superclamp - the ultimate tie down system for your snowmobile trailer. Check it out here! There was so much more at the show to tell you about - but why not catch the next one your self next year, or better yet, run over to the Toronto Show, Oct 20 - 23! It's great fun!

Zen Tour 2006

Look who I saw at the Big East show! Do you recognize these three beauties from Quebec? If you are the first to e-mail me their first names, I will send you a Zen Ski Hat! Hint - they all work for a hotel that is famous for a certain shower! 'nough said!

The Zen Tour this year will include all eight of my motel full sponsors. I will try my best to visit each of them and take good pictures for my readers. As most of you know, all my sponsors have to believe in giving honest trail conditions and weather reports, no matter what. They are also interested in your security, safety, and comfort. My sponsors are people that know how to look after the snowmobile visitor from away.

Zen Tour 2006 - 2007 JP had a great idea this summer. "Why don't we get all the Zenwaiter motel sponsors together", he said, "and make a ride out of it?" Better yet, lets also convinced our motel sponsors, to offer you a little something special, if you visit them during the week. Be sure to tell the people at these motels, that you are doing the Zen Tour, and who knows, you may get something special. I know Bernard at the Motel Safari will have one free cold beer waiting for you!

The Zen-Tour Circuit Our Zenwaiter sponsors have always been a small group, this year is no exception. We have eight motels that help to support this web site. Each of them has the right stuff to make your snowmobile holiday the best it can be.

Services that you need, like for example, secure truck and trailer parking, clean affordable rooms, good meals, fuel, and repair facilities available for your sled - these are the basics. Add to that, a knowledgeable and friendly staff, a spirit of hospitality, and knowledge of Quebec snowmobiling, and you have it all!
