Regional Beauty at Sunset on Lac Mourier The Abitibi region of Quebec remained uncolonized until the 1850's. That's when the first large wave of pioneers arrived. They came to prosper from the "Green Gold ", hardwoods and softwoods from the mixed and boreal forests. Later, in 1923, the discovery of copper and gold drew immigrants from various European countries. Larger cities were created like Rouyn-Noranda and Val D'Or. Smaller centers, such as Malartic have been able to preserve their pioneering charm. It still has the Far Western feel of the early settler days. The locals are a very friendly, interesting, easy-going, small town people that are eager to greet a new face. Today,
Abitibi is still an area where nature is the dominating force. With only 2.2 inhabitants
per square km, the wilderness is alive with all the classic Canadian animal life.
The landscape consists mostly of the typical rolling hills of the Canadian Shield.
The forests are mixed and boreal. Hundreds of various sized lakes dot the landscape.
Unpaved lumber roads snake around the hillsides. Many of the river crossings still
use covered bridges. How to Dress for Today's

House keeping cabins is what many American sledders
are looking for, but they are not that easy to find. You could hardly call these
homes mere 'cabins'. They are much more than that!
Also, these folks
just moved up from South Carolina, where they worked in their own masonary business.
That means that ... Snowmobile THEFT is nonexistent here, as they are isolated. They have a closed in parking area that is blocked off at night. They have NEVER had a problem with snowmobile theft here. All
around them are small villages and towns that feature all kinds of bars and restaurants.
All you have to do is grab your groceries on the way in, and enjoy your week!
Each chalet has a wood fireplace or stove, but also electric heat - this will
keep the place toasty while you are out. They do have a lodge restaurant, but they don't operate it in the winter. There are many places all around where you can spend money eating, but why not bring your own grub, cook for yourselves, and save a pile of cash? The cottages
run around 550. cnd pr week, but call for details. It's the perfect place to bring
the family or a bunch of close buddies. Location Yes, it may be a few hours further than you are used to hauling your trailer, but all the guests say it is well worth it. You have real peace and quiet up here, and of course, more snow that usually outlasts the snow down south. Snowmobiling
is an adventure sport, and this is where your adventure can start this winter!

Stories from our Blog! Snowmobiling, being in the tourist industry, is a very competitive business sector in Canada. Packages for vacationers are offered of all sorts, from the basic "here is a room and the kitchen is open over there at noon" arrangements to the all-inclusive, fully-guided, fully-equipped, chilled champagne on arrival, chocolates on the pillows, private ice fishing huts and on-site security. The winter tourism dollar is reward enough for adventure providers like us, to carefully craft a marketing strategy. One that is friendly, open, honest and interesting. We are fortunate being this far north as snow fall and cold are not at shortages here in the James Bay Frontier. It is always cold and snowing in the winter. Snow, in fact, becomes our region's greatest winter tourism resource and manage it well. Our world class trail systems simply outclass the rest. Canada's snowmobiling industry has gone through its share of ups and downs over the years. In the bright times, most of the tourist operators celebrate in a moving display of camaraderie. In the darker years though, the industry tends to take on a meaner marketing dimension. Desperate tour operators can resort to unsavoury means in order to get additional business. When threatened or hurt, they easily announce false accusations on forums about specific competitors or even entire regions and provinces. Sadly, some may even blatantly lie about the actual weather or trail conditions on the ground in order to rent a room or jsut to keep the deposit. This type of business practice can hang a dark cloud on an entire region's industry when it is left unchallenged. That is why sled paths reporting, the actual happenings on the ground need to be delivered to potential vacationers in a completely honest way. Not only is it a reflection of good ethics for the winter destination but it is also a testimony to the industry as a whole within a region, an entire province or even the whole snowmobiling industry in Canada. If it hadn't snowed for three weeks and the temperatures have been consistently hovering in the low teens, then it is unethical to report that a snow storm just passed through. To continue in the charade and to suggest that the groomers are warming up is an unspeakable act of distrust. To take the whole play to the point when you declare that they have just headed out to make a way for you ... is a downright, low-down, terrible, terrible thing.

Snowmobiling Vacation ! Trail permits are available from your local club representatives. You can also buy them at your snowmobile dealer and at many restaurants and lodging places situated near the trail network. As you must know, most of the revenue from your permit goes directly to your club. So if you buy where you ride, your money improve the trails you ride most often. Unfortunately, this picture is marred by an excessive number of accidents that result in serious or fatal injuries. For example, 21 snowmobilers died as a result of accidents during the 2005-2006 season. For close to 10 years now, the reports issued by the Office of the Chief Coroner have clearly indicated that speeding, alcohol abuse, and carelessness are the main causes of fatal snowmobile accidents, both on public roads and on off-road trails. In 1996, after consulting with various parties who have an interest in this activity, the Ministère des Transports (MTQ) asked the National Assembly to adopt the Act respecting off-highway vehicles. This legislation brought in rules governing the use of all OHVs, including snowmobiles, in order to counter the increasing number of serious accidents and deaths. In 2006, the
Act was amended to tighten rules and improve coexistence between snowmobile trail
users and neighbouring residents. |
