Quad Trail and Snowmobile trails. How do we share these?

Last Thursday I (Bob Petit) had the privilege of spending a day riding snowmobile with Luc Desjardins, a quad enthusiast for seventeen years, and president of a quad club with 760 members.

We rode 220 kms in total, on trails of exceptional quality. We headed north from St-Jean-de-Matha to Pourvoirie Bazinet de Sainte Émélie-de-l'Énergie, where we listened to the owner explain at some length, how the quad riders have continually crossed his pourvoirie territory with permission.

One of the main reasons for this trip, was to provoke dialogue on the issue of the growing demand for quad trails in a region where business people have spent thirty years and millions of dollars developing the infrastructure for a thriving snowmobile industry.

The owner of the Glaciere was happy to receive us and add his two cents worth to the discussion. He was delighted to meet Desjardins and speculate a future where a true four season quad trail system will unite St-Come, St-Zenon, La Glaciere, and St-Michel in the near future.

[Zen Note: The Quad Club of St-Zenon is registered as a four season club, but only runs three. The St-Michel Club, under Pierre Tardif's hand, has made tremendous efforts with their true winter quad club, against stiff opposition. Tardiff has the vision, and has been trying to connect his winter quad trails with St-Emilie to the south.]

One hot topic that kept coming up on our trip, is the terrible danger entailed in a double usage policy. Snowmobiles run too fast, and the quad machines destroy the smooth trails with deep ruts. The two sports cannot share the same trails without incurring serious accidents.

The Quad sport is evolving in Quebec, and offers a unique way to explore the Province from one end to the other.

SNOW DROUGHT IN SOUTHERN LANAUDIERE REGION...SO GO NORTH.

Winter and the cold temperatures have certainly been around, but sadly, the snow has not followed.

The volounteers of the Bon Vivant Club have tried to open the trails, but the lack of snow has not permitted it. They must have a foot of snow on the ground, or else, they cannot take the groomers onto the farm land without causing damage. The little snow that they do have, is blown away by the wind.

The right of passage which is offered by each individual farmer must be respected, or they may not sign it next year. So my dear snowmobilers, we must patiently await Mother Nature for the snow!

In the meantime, go up to the north of Lanaudiere region, where the trails have been open since mid December. You can start your ride in St-Gabriel-de-Brandon, where you can easily find a room for the weekend, something that may be difficult further north. LE PRÉSIDENT DU CLUB QUAD BRANDON LANAUDIÈRE LUC DESJARDINS EN MOTONEIGE

Jeudi dernier, j'ai eu le plaisir de faire de la motoneige en compagnie d'un passionné de quad Luc Desjardins un gars qui roule depuis 17 ans en quatre roues et qui aujourd'hui est le président d'un club de 760 membres.

Nous avons au cours de la journée parcourue 220 km dans des sentiers d'une qualité exceptionnelle. Parti de Saint-Jean-de-Matha par le sentier des Pionniers nous avons fait un premier arrêt à la
Pourvoirie Bazinet de Sainte Émélie-de-l'Énergie ou le propriétaire en avait long à raconter sur le comportement des quadistes qui sans permission traversent sa Pourvoirie.

Il faut dire qu'un des volets de cette randonnée était justement de connaître l'opinion des gens de la motoneige pour bien comprendre ce monde qui depuis une trentaine d'années a réussi à se construire toute une solide structure dans ce
sport motorisé.

Un arrêt à l'Auberge la Glacière nous apportait un tout autre son de cloche puisque le propriétaire était bien heureux de rencontrer Luc pour discuter d'un éventuel sentier quatre saisons qui pourrait unir les villages de Sainte-Émélie, Saint-Côme, La Glacière, Saint-Zénon et Saint-Michel-des-Saints dans un avenir prochain.

UN SENTIER POUR LE QUAD ET UN SENTIER POUR LA MOTONEIGE

Si il est une chose qui a été discutée à chacun de nos arrêts et ce dans plusieurs relais de motoneige, c'est qu'il est très dangereux pour les utilisateurs de se promener dans un sentier partagé, la vitesse des motoneiges et les sillons faits par les quads dans la neige sont entre autres, des raisons qui peuvent causer de graves accidents, et Luc en a été bien convaincu lorsque nous avons été contraints de suivre un groupe de motoneigistes qui roulaient à peine 50km heure. Il faut dire que dans le nord de la région il est presque impossible de dépasser, car les sentiers dans les montagnes sont très sinueux.

À CHACUN SON SENTIER ET LES VACHES DE M. SÉGIN SERONT BIEN GARDÉES

Le monde du quad change, et tout comme celui de la motoneige il deviendra dans un avenir très prochain un moyen unique au pays du Québec, de voyager du Nord au Sud et de l'Est à l'Ouest à travers un réseau de sentier qui nous amènera selon notre choix, à prendre des vacances chez nous et à cultiver cette amitié qui existe dans nos sports motorisés.

RANDONNÉE MOTONEIGE DU CLUB JOLIETTE

En fait, c'est un choix de deux randonnées que l'on vous propose samedi prochain le 1er mars, la première dite familiale de 120km et la deuxième la sportive de 200km. La journée débute dès 7h00 par le déjeuner du motoneigiste (lieu de départ) au Restaurant Rhinos au 197 rue Visitation coin chemin du Golf ou sentier Trans-Québec 43. 9h00 départ des
randonnées, 12h30 dîner à la cabane à sucre Émery à Saint-Damien et retour à 16h30 au club de Golf de Joliette pour le souper à 18h00 qui sera suivi d'une soirée ou plusieurs prix de présence seront tiré parmi les participants. Aucun frais d'inscription information 450-755-4444
