24 2004 Zen goes for a ride south of the Border, to deliver 24 quality used sleds, with Danny the driver.. what a blast! "The best part was seeing the happy faces of the proud new owners!" scroll down... |
Danny the friver smiles, Rocky is excited... "We're off....."
At 2:30 am, Danny picks me up in front of the Zen
Shack. We drop Rocky off at the baby sitter on the
way towards St-Emelie. Rocky wants to stay with us.
At Joliette we stop for some health food at Tim Horton's.
Danny is pumped and ready for the trip. I am half asleep.
Danny thinks this is funny, he takes a photo of me hard
at work. He insisted I use this photo, so here it is. It's 6 am
and the sun is coming up over the frozen horizon.

I grab this photo as we enter Cornwall Ontario and prepare
mentally for crossing the border. I hate the border.
Through the back window, I see the sun coming up and
reflecting its' glory on our precious cargo of 21 2004 sleds,
(and one 2001). Our custom built trailer is as long as any 18
wheeler. Everywhere we go people honk, smile, and say "Can
I buy one of those?" Danny smiles back and shakes his head
from side to side... "Nope! Dey are hall sole!".

We got through the border in one piece, taking only about
an hour. About half an hour south however, we had to pull
into an inspection lane, where we got the third degree. Here
we see Danny hooking up the little battery that powers the
emergency trailer brake lock up.
This was the only thing that the inspector got us on, and he
had to look really hard to find this. Danny swapped out a sled
battery to fix it on the spot. The guy was in no laughing mood,
so we got a ticket for the infraction, even though we fixed the
problem there and then.

I take a photo of the ticket, Danny hides his face! We don't
know the amount of the fine. "We'll send the fine to your boss"
says the grumpy inspector.

We finally arrive to our first drop zone, somewhere north of
Syracuse NY. There is a small crowd of excited snowmobilers
awaiting us with big smiles of anticipation.
Danny pulls the covers off the
sleds, drops the ramp to the
ground, and just as slick as you please, he backs the sleds
off the trailer one by one. When asked by one of the buyers
how often he comes to the US to deliver, he says "About
three times a month." Then he adds, "But I don't always
have this many sleds".
Imagine, like new 2004 Polaris snowmobiles with very low
mileage, delivered to your town for thousands less than
you'd pay for new. No wonder the guys were so happy. The
other passers by that followed us into the parking lot were
disappointed that we had no extras, everything was presold.
Vroom vroom...
And the buyers quickly inspected their trophies, delighted
with what they saw. Each sled is totally reconditioned, and
look like new.
One at a time, the paperwork is signed. Everything is in order.
Location Haute Matawinie has been serving American clients
for years, and the system runs like clockwork. First class sleds
for unbeatable low prices. Volume is the key.
The sleds get pulled up onto waiting trailers and wisked off to their
new homes.
This young hopeful was passing by with his Mom, and he
wanted his picture taken on this nice sled.
This buyer quickly ties down his new acquisition, and gives
us a big smile.
" A friend of mine got one from you last year" he said.
After another few hours in the truck, we arrived at one of our
dealers in Greece NY.
This is where I got to see Danny really swing into action,
lowering the top deck to roll off the inventory.
The last two sleds were just behind the cab on the deck.

unloaded the sleds, 3 customers showed up, and picked out
the ones they wanted. Selling these is easy!

After we unloaded the sleds, we headed off to
our room in the Comfort Inn. After checking in,
we walked next door the the Red Lobster and
strapped on the feed bad. Lobster, prawns, crab,
you name it. You Yanks sure know how to serve
up good food.
At 6 am, we headed home. The border was nasty
as usual, taking us 3 hours to clear customs. They
are just doing their job... (that's what I keep telling
myself.)
Danny has a job he loves, making people happy!
The job is not without its tough spots. The border,
the inspections, and the paperwork that truckers
have to deal with nowadays, is huge.
I enjoyed the ride, but it was very tiring.

That's right, the old Zen-man, drove with Daniel all the way to Cape Breton Island,
then got the old truck and trailer up onto the ferry and went to the Rock, where we delivered 26 sleds.
We could have sold 100! It was litterally seven days of driving.. sheer hell it was.. read more here..
