Volunteers restoring
legacy of the ice Oval in Ironwood Michigan
Sept 24 2007: IRONWOOD Michigan -- It'll take a lot of volunteers
to rekindle the legacy of ice oval snowmobile racing in Ironwood.
And, that's just what's happening for the first U.S. Snowmobile
Association sanctioned race of the season. The three-day Snowmobile
Olympus scheduled to return to the Gogebic County Fairgrounds
Jan. 4-6, along with Pro-Vintage Sno Pro Series racing, is the kick-off
to a 10-day Sled Fest event that will include events throughout
the Gogebic Range. "This (Sled Fest) event will prove
that we are definitely one area, the Gogebic Range," Scott
Erickson, Ironwood city manager, said with pride. Get this snowmobile racing story here...

Check Maps, and
be prepared to ride in Ontario Canada
The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs has created a vast network
of recreational snowmobilers, and part of their goal is to create
safe and legal areas to pursue their hobby in prime regions of Canada.
As a result, there are thousands of kilometres of trail around the
Town of Parry Sound, with the majority of them well groomed all
winter long. Of course it is essential on any outdoors trip, and
especially one in Canada, to be properly prepared. Therefore it
is essential not only to check the weather conditions on the dates
you plan on going out, but the state of the trails as well. Many
of the trails are on land that is privately owned, and snow that
is not deep enough will mean not only that the trails are unsafe,
but also that this land is vulnerable to damage. Its important
that all people taking part in recreational activities do their
part to make sure that these lands continue to be open.

North Augusta Trail Blazers-
Maine based snowmobile club marks 40th
One wouldn't normally associate hurricanes with snowmobiles, but
the North Augusta Trail Blazers are particularly proud of the relationship
between the two. Two years ago, when Hurricane Katrina devastated
the city of New Orleans, the central Maine snowmobile club donated
$2,500 to the relief efforts there. It was a giant step forward
for a club that didn't even have running water when it held its
first meeting in its own clubhouse in 1967. "Keeping our equipment
up is important to us, but biggest thing is we want to give to charity,"
said longtime member Edna Doyon of Belgrade, speaking about the
club's fundraising efforts. "We were not always able to do
things like that before. Maybe once in a while, if someone had an
accident, we'd hold a spaghetti dinner and raise $75 or something.
But this year, we gave Pine Tree Camp $1,000, and when Hurricane
Katrina hit, we raised more than $2,500. "We're very, very
proud that we're able to donate to charities." Get the whole snowmobile

Quebec
Snowmobile Accommodations Motels Hotel Selecting a snowmobile resort in Quebec Canada
requires a certain amount of thought, planning, and research. Here
are a few things you want to keep in mind whilst making your selection.
First off, your snowmobile accommodations are often in flux
due to the weather, trail conditions, the health of your buddies
traveling with you, the mechanical state of your snowmobiles,
or even the alignment of the planets.
I feel sorry for snowmobile motel and hotel
owners, especially those that are located at the ends of the earth,
deep in the bush. What seemed to be a solid motel booking for 4 rooms
for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night, can easily turn into a total
no show - the room reservations are left empty, and so is the
pocketbook of the motel owner.
The four snowmobilers were indeed heading towards
their motel, but then one of the bearings in the axle of the
snowmobile trailer burned up and the trailer and sleds flipped
into the highway along the New Jersey turn pike. Once the potential
guests got going again, they got delayed at the Canada USA border
because one of the boys forgot that he had a DWI back in 1989. He
has to go home.
Then, the weather drops a high wind on the south
side of Montreal and the rain turns into freezing rain; all traffic
is now delayed. When the boy finally arrive at the motel, it is Sunday
afternoon, but there are only three left. They all take off for a
quick ride before dinner, but the Arctic Cat sled blow up 50 miles
out. The three can't make it back to sleep, they have to sleep somewhere
else.
And on and on it goes. The snowmobile accommodations
business is a tough one. Just ask Bernard at Motel Safari in
Shawinigan Quebec, who has been at it for over twenty years.
"Frankly Zen, you never know who or how many are actually gonna
turn up... it has nothing to do with the reservations in the
book, or the Visa slip deposits that you have taken. You get what
you get, and you just have to roll with it."
Then there is the question of snow. Will we have
enough snow on the trails to groom this winter? Last winter the answer
was a resounding "NO" right up till mid February. The winter
was an unmitigated disaster for motel and hotel owners, due
to repeated cancellations. Those that own snowmobile hotels, B&B'S,
motels, and resorts or cabins, have a right to be edgey and frustrated
at times, so be nice to them!
