Zen
is on the road to Ymir BC
Day One - Nov 12, 2005
Leaving my home town of Vernon BC 9:30 am November 12 2005.

Rounding a curve in the mountains west
of Kelowna in 'Big White' Ski Hill country.

The cattle are grazing near Beaverdell.

A giant moose springs onto the highway, I fumble for my camera,
and of course it is
on the wrong setting - so - this is the best I could do. This guy
was huge.

Rock Creek store for tourists, sells antiques and home grown wood
working.

Greenwood: a historical mining town with a massive smelter, tons
of charm, and a great coffee shop.

The town of Grand Forks has interesting eye popping rock formations
everywhere. This town was built by Russian immigrants known as Dukhabors,
and has a fascinating history highlighted by the 'Sons of Freedom',
a religious sect that protested conscription when Canada was at
war, protested having to send their kids to public schools, and
demanded the religious freedoms that the Canadian government had
promised before they immigrated. They often organized nude marches
in the streets to get the attention of the Canadian government,
but their movement was crushed by the status quo in the end.

A few miles out of Grand Forks, the Big Horn sheep were protesting
on the highway.
There was about thirty head. A local passer by told me that they
had never seen the sheep
so close to the highway, and in such large numbers.

They were confident and defiant; I got closer and closer with my
new Nikon digital camera, and
my new 500 mm zoom lens. They observed me with cautious suspicion.

This was the biggest buck, he stood guard over the cows on a high
piece of land. He dared me to mess with him. I got as close as I
could, and he smiled at me. If I was a hunting man, I would have
been drooling, but of course, I wouldn't kill a mouse. Too beautiful.
