Sunshine
Ride on the Mount Baldy
Day 3 - Saturday Nov 14, 2005
This is day three of my trip
to Ymir BC, and the weather has cleared up - Thank God! We
got up early and got the boys off to school on the bus. Then
Dave drove off to Nelson top get gas for the sleds, while
I practiced working with my virtual office for the first time.
Even with his slow Internet connection, I managed to get the
page up onto the server.
I was really looking forward
to seeing the mountain tops in the light. Yesterday I saw
nothing but snow. Today, this is the view that greeted us
as we drove up the mountain into Wild Horse Pass.

The higher the elevation, the deeper the snow.

It was a perfect day; crystal blue skies, no wind, and lots of fresh
powder.
We trailored up about seven kilometers.

With Mount Baldy in the background, I told Dave to pull over and
pose for my camera. With twenty years of experience in these mountains,
I had full confidence in his ability to keep me safe, though the road
had
a wicked drop off on every switchback.

Dave grabs my photo, for my kids I said... just in case I don't get
back in one piece.

We are ready to ride.

I asked Dave to get one good shot of me, just to prove I was really
here. I had to pinch myself!
It was amazing.. mind blowing.

Dave is an excellent guide. Every time I stopped to grab some photos,
he would tell
me a story about Paddy, his partner who he rode with for years. Sadly,
Paddy passed
away last summer in a mountain accident. It takes courage for Dave to
continue the tours,
without his buddy. I told him about Crazy Al and me; a similar challenge
- to go on.

And the rewards of the effort are all around us. This is God's playground.
The peak of
MT Baldy towered up above us as we climbed up, up, up. Mountain tops
appeared on all sides.

Trees are loaded with snow, and underfoot, there is now five feet of
powder.

Dave rockets over a bank, and the snow explodes with joy!

I try to follow, but am not used to this kind of riding. I have alot
to learn. The air is pure.

I enjoy following Dave with my lens as he ripps through the deep powder.
He has a huge smile on his face.

The trees stand like soldiers in the strong sunlight.

After a few hours of riding we stop, and Dave produces cold Swedish
meatballs.
It's surprising how delicious these taste up here.

Then it's cold turkey left overs.. very good. Have you ever known me
to refuse a free meal?

The sun is slowly lowering in the sky, and by three PM, we start heading
back.
Dave keeps playing in the powder!

At the top of Wild Horse Pass, this structure had me asking questions.
It's an outhouse,
fifteen feet up in the air! Talk about a view. Dave says there is twenty
feet of snow pack
in a good winter, which means that you would actually have to dig down
to get into this head!

More perfect light, more fun.

We went in about ten kilometers, but there was at least forty five
left on the trail. We never made it back into the bowl, we just ran
out of light. It was my fault. I kept stopping to take pictures.

We got the sleds back on the trailer, and headed home. This moose was
galloping in front of us for several
kilometers. Wild life is everywhere.

Near the bottom of the pass, the mist was rising from the valley floor,
and the sunlight was turning
pink. The perfect end to a perfect mountain tour.
Do not miss the Radio version of this story which I
am working on right now.
In a day or two it should appear on our Zen
Talk Radio Page.
A huge THANK YOU goes out to Dave
of KMA TOURS in Ymir BC.
A special thanks goes to Michelle, his fabulous lady, and to his boys
Drew and Dale.
